Based on genetic and morphometric differences, Dietzen et al. (2003)  proposed to separate the Gran Canaria Robin from E. r. superbus of Tenerife as a new taxon in a nomenclaturally invalid way. Here, we provide a formal description of the new subspecies (Erithacus rubecula marionae subsp. nov.) in accordance with the rules of the International Commission of Zoological Nomenclature.
